The nine-foot bronze statue of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing and a five-time Olympic swimming medalist, stands arms-outstretched on Kuhio Beach across from the Hyatt Regency on Kalakaua Avenue. Sculpted by Jan Gordon Fisher and unveiled in 1990 to commemorate Duke's burial at sea off this very stretch of sand, the statue's base lists his Olympic achievements and his role popularizing surfing worldwide. Visitors typically drape it with fresh plumeria leis as a sign of respect, then take photos against the Diamond Head backdrop. Free to visit at any hour, with the most flattering light at sunrise or sunset. Pair it with the adjacent Kuhio Beach Hula Mound, where free torch-lighting ceremonies and hula performances take place Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 6:30 p.m.
"A must-stop photo spot. We came at sunset, the lei draped on his outstretched arms was beautiful, and the light off Diamond Head behind him was perfect. Free, and just steps from the beach."
